Thousands expected at L.A. midnight run

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Thousands of runners will hit the streets of Downtown Los Angeles when the clock strikes Saturday.

Some 7,500 people are expected to take part in the Los Angeles Nike+Human Race, beginning at 12:01 a.m. Saturday.

It's just one of 24 races taking place worldwide in what organizers call the world's largest one-day running event.

The 10-kilometer race starts at USC and will end at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

Nike media relations manager Jacie Prieto-Lopez says organizers chose the unique 12:01 a.m. start "to create some energy around the USC campus."

Celebrity runners set to participate include actor Wilmer Valderrama, "90210" star AnnaLynne McCord as well as Michael Rady and Shaun Sipos from "Melrose Place."

Organizers say added security and appropriate lighting will be implemented along the course.

The race also benefits a good cause as a portion of every entry fee will be donated to A Better L.A., the nonprofit organization founded by USC football coach Pete Carroll to promote peace and unity in Los Angeles.

Other cities hosting races include New York City, Rome and Buenos Aires.
