GARDENA, Calif. (KABC) -- An apparent carjacking ended with an officer-involved shooting Monday in Hawthorne, and authorities surrounded a business where a suspect was believed to be hiding.
The shooting occurred near a 99 Cent Store at 135th Street and Crenshaw Boulevard, according to the Hawthorne Police Department.
On the east side of Crenshaw Boulevard is Gardena, on the west side is Hawthorne. Police believe one of the suspects may be inside a nearby 99 Cent Store. Workers reported seeing one of the men run into that store after the officer-involved shooting out front.
The trouble all began before noon Monday. Hawthorne Police say three suspects carjacked a driver in a brown Toyota Scion at the 7-Eleven at 135th and Lemoli Avenue.
A few minutes later, Gardena Police spotted the vehicle outside the 99 Cent Store on Crenshaw.
An officer opened fired, wounding one person. The suspect was reportedly shot in the shoulder, suffering a non-life-threatening injury.
Another suspect ran into the neighborhood and got away, and the third reportedly ran into the store.
A SWAT team was brought in to go through the building.
Crenshaw Boulevard remained shut down Monday evening between Rosecrans Ave. and El Segundo Blvd. as authorities carefully went through the building.
