SANTA MONICA (KABC) -- As America marks the 83rd anniversary of the numbered highway system, Santa Monica city officials will designate Santa Monica Pier as the official western ending point of Route 66.
The iconic highway runs from Chicago to Los Angeles, but doesn't actually reach the Santa Monica shore. The route first ended at 7th Street and Broadway in Santa Monica in 1926, and was later extended to Lincoln and Olympic boulevards.
That's not stopping city officials from throwing a party and calling the pier: "The end of the trail" to Route 66.
To mark the occasion, 66 vintage cars and motorbikes will drive the so-called final stretch of Route 66 from Santa Monica and Lincoln boulevards to the pier at Colorado and Ocean avenues. A ceremony will then take place unveiling the "End of the Trail" sign.
