DOWNEY, Calif. (KABC) -- Tesla Motors is nearing a deal to build an electric car factory in Downey.
That's according to the mayor of Downey, Mario Guerra who said Tuesday that if the deal goes through, Tesla will take over the site of a former NASA manufacturing complex.
Guerra has called an emergency city council meeting to approve a memorandum of understanding with the company that owns the complex, Industrial Realty Group.
San Carlos-based Tesla did not commenting.
The company had been on the hunt for a factory to build its Model S electric sedan. The car is scheduled to go into production by 2012.
The Associated Press contributed to this report.
