Rapper's tweet jams sheriff's phone lines

Saturday, August 13, 2011

A rapper known as The Game could face criminal charges after his Twitter post jammed phone lines the Compton Sheriff's Station.

The rapper, whose real name is Jayceon Terrell Taylor, posted a phone number on his Twitter account and told his followers to call it for an internship.

But it turns out the number was for the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Compton Station, which was then flooded with hundreds of calls over a two-hour period starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday.

Deputies and dispatchers were overwhelmed by hundreds of hang-up calls and people looking for a music internship. At this point, it's unclear whether any calls for emergency services went unanswered.

Capt. Mike Parker sent The Game a tweet, telling him to delete the post with the Compton Sheriff's Station phone number because it was compromising public safety.

He tweeted in response, "Yall can track a tweet down but cant solve murders ! Dat was an accident but maybe now yall can actually do yall job."

It's unclear at this time who sent the tweet. A friend at the rapper's Glendale home said that the account had been hack, adding that his phone number was one of the numbers tweeted to followers.

"We are still waiting to see some kind of message come out from his Twitter handle that says that this was clearly an error, and this is a bad idea. So we're still waiting for that to happen," Parker said.

The sheriff's department has not spoken to The Game, but officials are investigating and plan to refer the case to the district attorney. The rapper could faces several charges including annoying phone calls, delaying or obstructing a peace officer from performing their duties and delaying a peace officer from using a law enforcement communications system.
