Northbound I-405 to shut down two nights

WEST LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The northbound lanes of the I-405 freeway will be shut down for two nights as construction continues on the Mulholland Bridge.

The closures will take place overnight Wednesday and Thursday from the Getty Center Drive to the 101 Freeway.

Ramp exits may close as early as 7 p.m. and freeway lanes will close beginning at 10 p.m., leading up to the full directional freeway closure between midnight and 5 a.m.

It's been six months since the highly anticipated "Carmageddon" event. It turned out to be much more mild than anticipated, but there is still a lot of work being done on the 405.

There are widening improvements in the interim as they rebuild the first side of the bridge before tearing down the second side. There is no exact time frame for "Carmageddon II," but the project director, Mike Barbour, is shooting for this summer.

"What you're going to see for the next year and a half, maybe even two years, is a lot of improvements in these areas," Barbour said.

After the freeway closure, the contractor will continue bridge work for at least a month, which may require additional freeway closures.

In the meantime, drivers just hope the improvements will eventually improve their commutes.

"We just have to deal with it, I guess," said Alex Wieder, a tow truck driver from Tarzana.

Traffic will be rerouted to Sepulveda Boulevard.

The price tag for the project will total more than $1 billion.
