LYNWOOD, Calif. (KABC) -- Shopping for a prom dress can be a bit overwhelming, and not to mention expensive. But what if you had your own fairy godmother to help you choose a dress that didn't cost you a penny?
For nearly 100 lucky girls, that wish came true thanks to The Prom Dress Project, a program sponsored by St. Francis Medical Center.
"We are here for those girls who might not be able to afford the cost of prom night and it's expensive!" said Dub Drees of the St. Francis Medical Center Foundation.
There are hundreds of items for the girls to choose from and they've all been donated, from the dresses down to the shoes and accessories.
Maritsa Negreta was one of the lucky girls chosen to take part in The Prom Dress Project. Volunteers, dubbed fairy god mothers, were on-hand to help out.
"I'm trying to convince her to try on five, six, seven, eight dresses so she can find the dress that is right for her," said Negreta's fairy god mother, Celeste Goff.
After trying on several dresses, Maritsa found the perfect look -- a sea blue gown with an empire waist.
"I came in thinking I wanted a short dress but I really like this dress and the fit it fits really well," Negreta said.
But the fun didn't end there. Makeup artist Michael Brassem lent his services to the girls, teaching them tricks of the trade. A raffle for free makeup was also held, but one very lucky lady will get the star treatment for her high school prom.
"The grand prize is I'm going to actually come into one of the girls' houses and do their makeup and hair for prom," Brassem said.
