5 South reopens after early-morning big rig crash in Norwalk
NORWALK, Calif. (KABC) -- All lanes of the southbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway in Norwalk have reopened after a big rig crashed and leaked fuel early Tuesday morning.
Officials said when the big rig hit the right guardrail around 3:15 a.m., one of its fuel tanks dislodged, went over the side of the freeway and hit a car on the street. No injuries were reported. About 200 feet of guardrail was damaged.
"We've got some guardrail damage. It's significant enough that Caltrans feels it's necessary to get that taken care of this morning," said Mike Harris of the California Highway Patrol.
The driver of the big rig was not injured. He said he was on his way to Anaheim from Ventura when he lost control because a car swerved in front of him.
Authorities said about 40 gallons of fuel spilled onto the freeway. All southbound lanes were closed, as crewed cleaned the fuel spill and repaired the damaged guardrail. Two lanes were reopened around 5:45 a.m., and the third lane was reopened about 8:15 a.m., the CHP reported.
