Walk for a Cause in Compton remembers slain pastor Oscar Duncan
COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- This year's 12th annual Walk for a Cause peace march in Compton had a different feel. The band played harder and hundreds of marchers chanted louder with the memory of slain youth pastor Oscar Duncan in mind.
"He really instilled a lot in me," said Danesha Garrett, who took part in the march Saturday. "He checked up on me. He was someone I wanted to keep in my life for a long time. He was like a brother and friend."
Duncan, 23, was gunned down in cold blood outside his mother's Venice Beach home last month.
The march began at 11 a.m. at Love and Unity Christian Fellowship in the city's south side and ended four miles later in the north end at Greater Zion Church Family, where Duncan attended church.
"He cared about the community," said Dr. Michael J. T. Fisher, Greater Zion's pastor. "He worked at the Boys & Girls Club, he did community service. You name it, he could do it."
Duncan also led a gang intervention program. He was shot in the head apparently by the very people he intended to help. Police arrested suspected gang members Kevin Green and Hopeton Parsley for the random shooting.
The march stands for everything Duncan believed in: unity, love, peace and an end to violent crime.
