Fontana man's killing may have been mistaken identity, family says

WATTS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Investigators are trying to find out why a Fontana man who was on his way to visit family members in Watts was shot dead.

Family members of 20-year-old Edward Sanchez say his dream was to one day be a police officer or firefighter. Those dreams were shattered Tuesday night when Sanchez was shot to death.

"I don't understand why this had to happen to my son, why he had to die the way he died," said Carmen Sanchez. "No one deserves to die like that. He was a good kid."

The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. in the area of 107th and Hickory streets in Watts. Family members say he was there visiting his grandmother's house to see her and his older brother.

Police said Sanchez was walking alone to the home when a shooter or several shooters appeared to target him for an unknown reason. Detectives said even though the suspects may be gang members, they do not believe Sanchez was part of a gang.

Family and friends of the victim said they believe it was a case of mistaken identity. They said gang members may have been targeting his older brother, who has a strong resemblance to him. They said his older brother was a member of a gang.

Carmen Sanchez says this is the second son who has been murdered.

"I cannot do it again," she said with tears in her eyes. "Two sons, I just can't handle it. I need help finding justice for my son, Edward. I lost two sons, one 8 years ago and now my Edward."
