Ex-city commission president pleads guilty in child porn case

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The former head of Los Angeles' Board of Neighborhood Commissioners has pleaded guilty to child pornography charges.

In exchange for the plea, prosecutors will recommend Albert Abrams receive a five-to-eight year prison sentence and a $5,000 fine.

Abrams acknowledged collecting more than 600 images of child pornography over 10 years. The 64-year-old stepped down from his position last year, after the FBI seized a computer from his home, containing the images.

In a Los Angeles Times report, Abrams blamed his behavior on a tumor that was removed recently from his spine. He told the Times that his medical condition "caused behaviors that were completely out of character."

While at his Board of Neighborhood Commissioners post, Abrams led a group that acts as a liaison between the many city neighborhoods and City Hall. Abrams has served on the board since 2008. The position is unpaid.
