LA medical marijuana petition signatures certified by city

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Los Angeles City officials say the petition filed by proponents of the city's marijuana ordinance has achieved sufficiency.

The announcement was made Monday by the city clerk. The petition had 49,021 pre-verified signatures and needed 27,425 valid signatures to be deemed sufficient. A statistical sampling of the signatures showed they were 110 percent valid, confirming the petition had more than the number of required verified signatures.

Now that the petition is certified, the City Council has 20 days to either repeal the ordinance, call a special election to be held in about the next three to four months, or add the ordinance to the next regular City election in March.

The Council is expected to take up the matter before Oct. 7.
