Hemet stolen car suspect strangled police dog

LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. (KABC) -- A Hemet man, who was on the run from authorities, was arrested after he allegedly strangled a police dog.

Investigators say 25-year-old Ryan Dunbar crashed a stolen car through a chain linked fence surrounding a mobile home park in the 32000 block of Stoneman Street in Lake Elsinore Friday morning.

He fled on foot and hid in some heavy bushes. When authorities sent a police dog into Dunbar's hiding area, investigators say the dog bit the suspect in the hand. That's when authorities say Dunbar tried to strangle the animal.

Dunbar was eventually arrested for battery on a police service dog, possession of stolen property, resisting arrest and unlawfully driving a stolen vehicle.

The police dog was treated for a minor injury.
