Exclusive: Man upset at charges over crash that took 2 legs
LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man who lost both legs after he was hit by a car in a downtown Los Angeles parking lot spoke exclusively to Eyewitness News Tuesday. He had both his legs amputated as a result of the crash. Another man lost one of his legs in the crash.
The driver faces charges for striking both men with his car, pinning them to the bumper of another car in a downtown Los Angeles strip club parking lot early Sunday morning. The parking lot is located at Olympic Boulevard and McGarry Street.
Sal Wilson is currently in intensive care. His life was changed in an instant by a man he says he's never seen before.
Wilson was leaving the club at closing time early Sunday morning.
The suspect, Terrence Meeks, is accused of using his BMW sedan to intentionally trap two men against a Mini Cooper, then continuing to accelerate.
One man had one leg severed. Wilson had both legs severed.
Eyewitness News spoke to him in his hospital room Tuesday, the first time he's spoken out about the crash.
"I could feel him accelerating against my legs. He would not let go," said Wilson. "The pressure, and then something gave, and it was like I was free, I was on the ground, and I looked down and there was my leg. My leg was detached from me. I just started crawling to get out of there.
"He just didn't look right when he hit me," said Wilson. "When I did see him, it looked like he was going through some kind of a psychotic episode or something, or he was scared, I don't know. I just don't think it's fair."
Terrence Meeks appeared in court Tuesday, charged with DUI and driving a vehicle that caused bodily injury. But he's not charged with attempted murder, which Sal Wilson doesn't agree with.
"I don't know, it's just not right. I don't think it's fair that a man gets $160,000 bail for taking off three legs. What is that? Forty-thousand apiece?" said Wilson. "My challenges haven't even started."
The district attorney's office says there's not enough evidence to charge Meeks with murder.
Wilson hopes to attend future court appearances of Terrence Meeks in a wheelchair.
