Glendale boy, 3, found wandering barefoot in pajamas; mom arrested

GLENDALE, Calif. (KABC) -- A 3-year-old boy was found wandering the streets of Glendale barefoot early Tuesday morning. His mother was arrested for child endangerment.

A driver called police after she spotted the boy trying to cross San Fernando Road at Brand Boulevard at about 2 a.m. The boy was in his pajamas and carrying a tablet computer.

"Some of the officers started working on the tablet and identified some pictures. There was a picture of a woman, and the child actually pointed to the picture and said, 'That's mommy,'" said Tom Lorenz with Glendale police.

Police say the child somehow got out of his second-story apartment on Vassar Street. He was found nearly a half a mile away. Police eventually located the boy's house after they found his address by using the tablet.

"They arrived on scene. They found the front door wide open. They made an announcement of their presence and they made entry. All of a sudden, the mother appeared and the first thing out of her mouth was, 'Where's my baby?'" said Lorenz.

Susana Wemyss, 39, was taken into custody and charged with two counts of felony child endangerment.

"The initial investigation was that she went out drinking earlier in the day, and when the officers arrived, she did smell of alcohol," said Lorenz.

A 4-year-old and 17-year-old were taken into custody by Department of Children and Family Services along with the 3-year-old.

Police are grateful the little boy wasn't hurt and are thankful he had a high-tech gadget with him when he was found.

As of 11 a.m., Wemyss remained in custody. Police said they were waiting for her to "sober up" so they can interview her and get her account of what happened.
