LA City Council ordinance to require bright-colored BB guns

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The Los Angeles City Council is moving forward with a plan to require all BB guns, pellet guns, and air rifles to be painted bright colors.

The goal is to be able to differentiate them from real weapons.

The measure was prompted by a pair of officer-involved shootings three years ago.

Councilman Bernard Parks questioned the measure saying it could offer a false sense of security to officers and possibly put their lives at risk.

"What I'm concerned about and even in the report it says it may prevent a future officer involved shooting, but, on the other hand, it may cause a major injury or death to law enforcement," said Parks. "In my judgment, I don't know if I think that's a proper balance."

Despite Parks' argument, the L.A. City Council voted 14 to 1 to have the L.A. City Attorney's Office draft the measure. It would apply only in the city of Los Angeles.
