Barricade ends with dead body discovery

Thursday, November 05, 2009

A barricade situation ended when police found a man's dead body in an Irvine apartment Thursday afternoon.

Orange County Sheriff's deputies attempted to serve an eviction notice at an Irvine apartment unit on the 400 block of Hayes Street at 1 p.m. Thursday. The man came to the door but quickly retreated inside. Then deputies heard a gunshot.

Police arrived to treat the incident as a barricade situation. Police waited for more than three hours before breaching the apartment.

A SWAT team on scene unsuccessfully attempted to contact the man inside. They stormed the apartment at about 4:25 p.m. and discovered the man's body, according to Irvine Police Lt. Henry Boggs.

Seven schools in the area were locked down between 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m.
