Santa Ana couple arrested for sexual assault of 9-year-old

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- A Santa Ana couple was arrested for the alleged sexual assault of a 9-year-old family member, police said.

Authorities began their investigation after the victim confided in a friend that she was being sexually assaulted by a family member. The friend told school officials at Heritage Elementary, prompting the school's principal to call the police department.

Nazario Enrique Cruz-Sanchez, 40, was arrested for the sexual assaults, and Estela Garcia, 28, was arrested for the active encouragement and participation in the acts. They're both charged with sexual intercourse or sodomy with a child younger than 10, oral copulation or sexual penetration of a child younger than 10 and lewd or lascivious acts with a minor, all felonies.

The victim, who is related to Garcia, lived with the suspects.
