A search is under way for a robbery suspect who held up a Seal Beach bank, threatening tellers with what he claimed was a pipe bomb.

Seal Beach police received reports of a robbery at the U.S. Bank at 13900 Seal Beach Blvd. at about 3:40 p.m. Friday.

Witnesses say the suspect entered the bank, brandished a handgun and placed what he alleged was a pipe bomb on a table. The suspect took an undisclosed amount of cash and fled with the bomb in hand. Witnesses said they saw the suspect run through the bank's parking lot.

Responding officers set up a perimeter around the bank and the surrounding shopping plaza but were unable to locate the suspect.

The suspect is described as a white male, between 25 and 30 years old with a thin build. He was seen wearing a beige baseball cap and a plaid jacket.

If you have any information regarding this case, you're urged to contact Detective Gary Krogman with the Seal Beach Police Department at (562) 799-4100.
