Huntington Beach retired generators revived to compensate for San Onofre nuclear plant

  

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- In an attempt to prevent summer power outages, two former Huntington Beach generators are being put back into service.

The move comes as a way to compensate for the loss of power from the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station.

The plant has been shut down for the past three months while the utility investigates why steam generator tubes were showing more wear then they should.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the Huntington Beach generators coming back online are at a natural gas-powered plant near the coast.

The two units should provide 440 megawatts of energy and support to allow power to be imported from the San Diego area.

The nuclear plant provided 2,200 megawatts to 1.4 million homes.
