Cypress woman convicted of firing at officers, causing standoff

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- A Cypress woman was convicted Monday of firing a gun at police officers and initiating a police standoff in 2010.

Brinda Sue McCoy, 49, dialed 911 from her home at 7 p.m. on Dec. 16, 2010 and said she needed police assistance. Cypress police officers responded. McCoy refused to leave her residence.

McCoy stayed inside her house, pointed a gun at her head and at the ceiling, then pointed it at officers outside through a window. She was warned against discharging the weapon.

McCoy then fired the gun at officers stationed behind parked vehicles outside. About 20 minutes later she fired again.

A SWAT team was summoned. SWAT officers used less-than-lethal force to arrest McCoy.

McCoy was found guilty by a jury Monday of five felony counts of assault with a semi-automatic firearm on a peace officer and a felony count of discharging a firearm with gross negligence with a sentencing enhancement, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office.

McCoy faces a maximum sentence of 29 years and eight months in state prison. McCoy is scheduled to be sentenced in Santa Ana on Sept. 10.
