ROSSMOOR, ORANGE COUNTY (KABC) -- Fire officials say an apartment fire in Rossmoor could have been a lot worse if it weren't for two off-duty law enforcement officers who helped evacuate residents.
The fire happened in the 12000 block of Montecito Road on Monday night. The two officers live in an apartment above the unit where the fire broke out.
"We're on the third floor, so we grabbed the nearest fire extinguishers we could, some wet towels, we went down to floor No. 1. It was pretty obvious there was a major fire incident," said law enforcement officer Jon Calvert. "So we got as close as we could, knocked on the doors, made entry to a few and made sure we could get as many people out as possible."
It took about 45 firefighters to put out the fire. Two people suffered smoke inhalation from the blaze.
Some residents were displaced as a result of the blaze and are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
