Ex-NFL player sentenced to life in prison for Newport Beach millionaire murder

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- A former professional football player was sentenced to life in prison without parole Friday for murdering a Newport Beach man in 1994.

Eric Andrew Naposki, 45, was found guilty of one felony count of special circumstances murder for financial gain on July 14, 2011.

Naposki was accused along with his former girlfriend Nanette Ann Packard of plotting to kill Packard's wealthy boyfriend. She was sentenced in May to life in prison without parole.

Packard was dating Bill McLaughlin, a wealthy divorced man living in a beachfront home in Newport Beach. She was being supported by McLaughlin, but then began dating Naposki, a former NFL linebacker for the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts. He was working as a nightclub bouncer at the time they dated.

Packard convinced Naposki to murder McLaughlin for financial gain, according to the Orange County District Attorney's Office. She stood to gain more than $1 million in insurance and benefits in McLaughlin's death. She provided a key to the house and information on McLaughlin to Naposki.

Naposki was convicted of entering McLaughlin's house and shooting him six times, killing him.
