A high-speed pursuit came to a crashing end on the 5 Freeway in Capistrano Beach, shutting down the southbound lanes.

It all started just after 4 p.m. Friday with police chasing a man suspected of stealing a car in Westminster.

The suspect hit speeds up to 100 mph before crashing the car and flipping over near Camino de Estrella. At least one other car was hit, possibly by debris.

Three people were taken into custody, while the driver was hospitalized in critical condition.

All southbound lanes of the 5 Freeway from Capistrano Beach were shut down during the initial investigation. All lanes have since reopened.
