A suspected car thief was pulled to safety after jumping into a flood control channel in La Mirada.

Sheriff's deputies went to the area of Firestone Boulevard and Trojan Way Thursday night after getting reports that someone was trying to break into cars.

They spotted the man hiding in some bushes. He ran off and jumped 30 feet into a flood control channel.

Two SWAT officers rappelled down to the man. Officials said the suspect broke both ankles and was taken to a hospital.
