4.4 quake hits near Westlake Village

  

WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. -- A 4.4-magnitude quake struck near Westlake Village just before 6:15 p.m. Friday.

A preliminary report said a magnitude-4.4 quake hit at 6:11 p.m., about seven miles northwest of Malibu, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The quake jiggled the greater Los Angeles region during afternoon rush hour and was felt as far north as Lancaster in the Mojave Desert to southern Orange County, according to online resident reports gathered by the USGS.

Kerstin Edwards, who lives a few miles from the quake's epicenter in Westlake Village, said she felt the temblor while she was upstairs in her house. She noticed no damage.

"It started off as a strong jolt," Edwards said. "It's definitely one of the bigger ones I've felt."

At the Bellavino Wine Bar in Westlake Village, owner Richard Belloff said a couple people attending a dinner party said they felt the quake but several others didn't notice.

"Everyone is drinking and partying and we didn't see the glasses move or anything," Belloff said.

A watch commander at the Los Angeles County sheriff's station near Malibu said there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The quake was felt in Thousand Oaks, Manhattan Beach, El Monte, Inglewood, Cypress, Long Beach, Palmdale, East L.A., San Pedro, Alhambra, and Bellflower.
