Moorpark may ban smoking in public areas

Monday, June 29, 2009

The smoking ordinance in the city of Moorpark may soon be amended.

On June 17, the Moorpark City Council initially approved an amendment to an existing smoking ordinance, prohibiting smoking in public areas, including parks, sidewalks and athletic fields. Violators can be fined $100 to $500 depending on how many times they are citied within a period of time.

Council members said their intention is to promote a healthier environment.

The ordinance still needs final approval from the Moorpark City Council. The council is set to take up the issue on Wednesday. If council members approve it, the new ordinance would take effect August 1.

Other local cities with similar smoking laws include Calabasas, Santa Monica and Los Angeles.

The Ventura County Star contributed to this report.
