SIMI VALLEY, Calif. (KABC) -- A woman could face criminal charges after nearly two dozen sick cats and puppies were seized from her store in Simi Valley.
Officials said two dogs were found dead at the store from the parvovirus. A few others were in critical condition and may not survive. The storefront is known as Healing Hearts Animal Rescue in the 600 block of East Los Angeles Avenue.
The Humane Society of Ventura County said it went to the store Friday after reports of sick pets being sold and adopted out. Officials gave the owner, Penny Dulaff, 24 hours to comply and get the animals vet care, but they say she didn't.
"My officers, with the help of Ventura County Animal Services, went in, found another deceased animal, one of which she had been required to get vet care for. So we had two deceased and that's when we impounded the rest of the animals. We took out 19 live animals and two deceased," said John Brockus with the Humane Society of Ventura County.
The animals are being cared for at the Humane Society's shelter. Eyewitness News tried contacting the owner, and she had no comment.
