Texas woman calls 911 over shrimp order

Wednesday, April 08, 2009

Dispatchers for 911 usually do not take kindly to people who call with non-emergencies, but a dispatcher in Texas seems to have gone along with a woman who called 911 to complain that she had not gotten extra shrimp with her takeout order of shrimp-fried rice.

Police in Haltom City, Texas, on Tuesday released a tape of the 911 call that was made the day before. The caller said she had gone to A&D Buffalo's restaurant and paid $1.62 for extra shrimp.

"I always get the shrimp-fried rice," the caller explained on the tape, "But I said I wanted to get extra meat this time. But he didn't even put extra shrimp in there." The caller goes on, "I'm just saying, to get an officer up here, what has to happen?"

Incredibly, the dispatcher -- who either misunderstood the situation or wanted police to confront the woman -- responds, "I'm going to send an officer, I just don't know how long it's going to take."

An officer did show up at the restaurant, but the caller was gone. Restaurant employees said they had refused to give the woman a refund because she had left with her order, then came back later to complain.

Police say, they do not plan to pursue charges against the woman, though it is a crime to call 911 with a non-emergency. In a recent case in Florida, a woman who called 911 to complain about her McDonald's order was arrested and charged with misuse of the emergency system.
