Moorpark decathlon team meets president

Thursday, June 25, 2009

Ten members of the Moorpark Academic Decathlon Team celebrated winning the national championship by paying a visit to President Barack Obama at the White House Wednesday.

The president invited the team after it won the back-to-back national championship April 25, earning 30 individual medals.

The championships test students on economics, art, music, math, language, literature, as well as physical and social sciences.

Team Captain Neil Paik says the team adopted the Obama campaign slogan, "Yes, we can." Paik says he got the president to repeat the campaign slogan right before they left.

It was the third trip to the Oval Office for team coach Larry Jones. The Moorpark team met with President Bill Clinton after winning the 1999 championship and with President George W. Bush in 2003.
