US att'y files Beresford-Redman extradition

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The U.S. Attorney for the Central District of California formally requested the extradition of Bruce Beresford-Redman to Mexico on an outstanding arrest warrant and filed the formal extradition papers.

U.S. Attorney Andre Birotte Jr. released the formal documents Monday.

Beresford-Redman, a reality-television producer, is wanted in Mexico for the murder of his wife, Monica Beresford-Redman, who was discovered dead at a Cancun resort on April 8, 2010.

Monica Beresford-Redman was found dead in a sewage treatment plant at the Hotel Resort Moon Palace Nizuc, killed by asphyxiation.

Bruce Beresford-Redman had reported his wife missing April 6, saying he had last seen her the day before.

Witnesses reported seeing the couple arguing and Bruce physically threatening Monica on Apr. 4. Hotel patrons in an adjacent room reported hearing loud arguing and commotion coming from the Beresford-Redman room the morning of Apr. 5 and complained to the hotel's management.

Monica's body had scratches on the neck, signs of asphyxiation and evidence of a heavy blow to the right temple. Investigators believe she was suffocated Monday night before being dumped in the sewer about several hundred yards from her hotel room.

Hotels guests told Mexican police they heard the couple arguing Monday night, reportedly over their two children. A hotel security guard reported seeing Bruce trying to hit Monica during a heated argument. The hotel's electronic lock system showed the door to the couple's room was opened and closed at least 11 times that night.

Beresford-Redman had scratches on his neck and arms. According to an official at the attorney general's office in Quintana Roo state, he told police on Tuesday that his wife had left the hotel to go shopping the previous day and never returned

Despite orders to remain in Mexico, Bruce Beresford-Redman returned to his home in Rancho Palos Verdes in California on May 24, 2010.

According to the U.S. District Attorney's Office in L.A., the government of Mexico issued a provisional arrest request to the United States for Beresford-Redman. He was taken into custody by U.S. federal marshals on Nov. 16, 2010.

The Embassy of Mexico in the U.S. formally submitted Beresford-Redman's extradition request on Jan. 13, 2011.
