President Obama lays out plan to help unemployed veterans

WASHINGTON (KABC) -- President Barack Obama laid out his plans to help unemployed veterans get back into the job market on Monday.

The president met with veterans at the White House. He's pressing Congress to approve tax credits for businesses to hire former members of the military.

Speaking in the Rose Garden, Obama says supporting veterans who fought for their country is the responsibility of both political parties.

The Senate is expected to consider tax credits this week for businesses that hire unemployed veterans or injured vets who have been out of work.

Obama also unveiled a new "Veteran Gold Card" that allows veterans to get six months of personalized case management, assessment and counseling at career centers.

The Labor Department says about 12 percent of veterans who served in the military since Sept. 11 are unemployed.
