Ex-Rutgers student Dharun Ravi sentenced to 30 days in jail in webcam case
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (KABC) -- The former Rutgers University student convicted of hate crime in a webcam spy case has been sentenced to 30 days in jail and probation.
"I do not believe he hated Tyler Clementi," Judge Glenn Berman told the court. "He had no reason to, but I do believe he acted out of colossal insensitivity."
Dharun Ravi, 20, was convicted in March on 15 criminal counts, including two counts of bias intimidation.
Ravi used a webcam to spy on his roommate, Tyler Clementi, kissing another man in 2010. Days later, Clementi jumped off the George Washington Bridge in New York and killed himself after finding out about the webcam.
Berman said he would not recommend Ravi be deported to India, where he was born and remains a citizen. But Ravi was ordered to get counseling and to pay $10,000 that would go to a program to help victims of bias crimes.
Clementi's father, Joe, said in court Monday morning that Ravi "still does not get it," has no remorse for what he did and that he deserves punishment.
