Powerball fever back as jackpot grows to $425 million

Wednesday, August 07, 2013

Powerball fever is back across the U.S., as the jackpot grows to more than $425 million in Wednesday night's drawing. The winning numbers are 58 - 5 - 25 - 59 - 30 - Powerball: 32.

Hope is the key for people buying Powerball tickets at the Donut Star in Highland Park. Tacked on the store's walls were several winning lottery tickets from the past.

"I'm trying to win. I can pay the house off, and buy him things," said Frank Phillips of Highland Park as he sat with his son.

It was a family affair for Eric Jackson, getting three Powerball tickets for the three most important people in his life.

"These are the winning tickets right here," he said.

The $425 million jackpot is the third largest Powerball jackpot ever. The largest was $590.5 million, which was won by a single winner in Florida in May.

The Powerball game is played in 43 states, the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

It's high time a Southern Californian walks away with incredible Powerball riches. Even though California only started playing the game in April, the state ranks third in ticket sales.

"I need the money because I'm in a real bad position right now," said Roxana Fuentes of Highland Park. "I never buy lotto, but I'm doing it today."

The odds of matching all six numbers are 1 in 175.2 million.
