Toyota not liable for woman's death - jury

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A jury on Thursday found Toyota not liable for the death of a local woman in a case of alleged sudden acceleration.

Norkio Uno, 66, was killed in August 2009 in Upland when her Camry was struck by another motorist, sending her vehicle into a telephone pole and tree.

Her family sued, accusing the carmaker of failing to install a brake override safety system in the car.

Jurors deliberated for about five days before reaching their decision and concluding the vehicle's design didn't contribute to Uno's death.

Uno's family was seeking $20 million in damages. The jury found the 86-year-old motorist who ran a stop sign and hit Uno should pay the family $10 million, plaintiffs' attorney Garo Mardirossian said.

Toyota suggested Uno may have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake.

The company recalled millions of vehicles worldwide after drivers reported some Toyota vehicles were surging unexpectedly.
