TURIN, Italy -- Japan's Shizuka Arakawa slipped past two skaters ahead of her during the free skate to win the women's figure skating gold medal at the Turin Olympics.
It's Japan's first medal of the Turin Olympics.
The 2004 world champion outskated Sasha Cohen of the United States, who took the silver medal, and Russian world champion Irina Slutskaya, who got the bronze.
Cohen fell twice, on her first two jumps. Slutskaya fell once in her performance.
Arakawa's spectacular spirals were the highlight of her free skate. She scored a personal best of 125.32 points for the night.
