ANAHEIM, Calif. (KABC) -- There's already a damper on the pregame festivities for Thursday night's Angels postseason game with the Red Sox. A popular place to tailgate is being shut down by the city of Anaheim.
Hundreds of fans like to celebrate at a private parking lot on Orangewood Avenue near the stadium.
"Everybody having a beer, got a couple barbecues going, bunch of people, music's going," said Angels fan Patrick Dean.
However, the lot of shut down after the city contacted the owner of the lot last month.
The city told parking lot owner Mickey Tody that he would have to close when the regular season ended.
City officials said after complaints of drunken brawls on the lot and intoxicated drivers, they took a close look at the development agreement that the city has with the owner of the lot.
They determined that the lot is zoned for residential units and a related parking structure, not for public use.
The lot owner told Eyewitness News that he was told he'd need to apply for a conditional use permit to keep the lot open. He said that could take months, and the playoffs would be long over.
Tody said during the regular season, he could clear more than $6,000 during any given game, but now that the Angels are in the playoffs, he will not be making any money.
Alcohol is not allowed at the official stadium parking lot, so if you want to tailgate in the parking lot, bring your excitement and fun, but not booze.
