SAN DIEGO -- Authorities say an off-duty federal agent shot and wounded an armed man who broke into his San Diego County home and tried to steal his truck.
San Diego police Lt. Kevin Rooney says the agent, who works for Immigration and Customs Enforcement, was asleep at his Otay Mesa home early Sunday when he was awakened by an intruder who demanded the keys to his vehicle. The man had a hammer in one hand and a sharp implement in the other.
The agent told the man that his keys were in the kitchen and when the would-be thief left the room the agent armed himself. After a confrontation, the agent fired and hit the suspect once.
Rooney says the suspect was arrested and taken to a hospital where he is recovering from a non-life-threatening wound.
