Insurgent attacks in Kabul leave 36 dead

KABUL, Afghanistan (KABC) -- Insurgent attacks on the Afghan capital of Kabul and three other eastern cities have left dozens of people dead and many more injured.

Afghan and U.S.-led forces used heavy gunfire to overcome the 18-hour long insurgent attacks. A top Afghan official says the al-Qaida-linked Haqqani network is responsible.

At least 36 insurgents have been killed in the fighting, along with eight afghan security personnel. More than 50 others have been wounded.

This attack was the most widespread assault in the Afghan capital since last September's attack on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters. The Haqqani network was also behind that attack.

Haqqani commands the loyalties an estimated 10,000 fighters and is considered one of the most serious threats to NATO in Afghanistan.
