Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee: British consul-general in Los Angeles weighs in on excitement

HANCOCK PARK, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A big celebration is planned in Britain this coming weekend for Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee, marking her 60th anniversary on the throne.

In the Hancock Park area of Los Angeles, the British consul-general's residence shares some of the excitement. It's a little bit of Britain in Southern California, where Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge, spent the night when they visited the region. This weekend, there will be celebrations all over the world.

"Most Brits have only known one head of state, and that's the queen," said Consul-General Dame Barbara Hay.

Hay said Queen Elizabeth has been a constant in a changing world, always devoted to her people and to her duty as the monarch. That's why she is loved by her country.

"She's also demonstrated to her own family as well as to her nation and to the commonwealth how strong her sense of service is. She's passed that on to the Prince of Wales, who is passing it on to his children. Again, it's that sense of continuity," said Hay.

Prince William and his wife will be by Queen Elizabeth's side this weekend as they celebrate her Diamond Jubilee. Hay said to expect pageantry and elegance in typical British style.

There will be a service at St. Paul's Cathedral and a procession by carriage to Buckingham Palace. But she said the most impressive event may be when a thousand boats will fill the Thames River to celebrate 60 years of the queen.
