The Musicians Institute Presents Summer Shot Program

Thursday, June 01, 2006

The Musicians Institute in Hollywood, which started as a guitar school, offers a variety of teachings on different non-classical instruments and the music business. The Institute presents their Summer Shot Program, six days filled with music, hands-on courses, and performances.

"I heard about it from a friend who said it was a great school for contemporary music and to establish yourself in L.A.," Nate Lotz says. "Where better to do music." Keith Wyatt has been teaching at the Musicians Institute in Hollywood since it was originally set up to teach electric guitar. "This is back in '77 when this was still considered a hobby instrument and you had to study classical if you went to college," Keith recalls. "It was called Guitar Institute of Technology." Now you can also earn an associates or even, bachelors degree in bass guitar, keyboard, drums, and vocals. "If you're not that sort of an artistic type that writes or performs that is the star, then for every person in front of the stage there are another four or five backing them up, then there are another dozen behind the scenes that are taking care of business," Keith says. Specialized programs are available in recording, guitar making, and music video. <> Student, Daniel Abbott says the traffic is worth it from Orange County to Hollywood.

"The only place in California where you can get a real true connection with the music industry and what it's really like in here," Daniel says about the Institute.

The Musicians Institute is open to all players, beginning and intermediate, but not all classes are for everyone.

"We don't offer every class to the public," Keith explains. "But it is possible for someone to come off the street and pick from a roster of specific classes, guitar or vocal."

For full time admission, you should submit a tape of yourself in your best style of music.

"Express your dream as best you can," Keith advices about admission tapes. "On your instrument."

"It takes a lot of work, a lot of perseverance," Keith says of playing. "You have to know your craft. Music is a craft."
