Extreme weather: Mudslide, flash flooding reported in parts of IE

FOREST FALLS, Calif. (KABC) -- Wild weather has triggered flash flood warnings in parts of San Bernardino and Riverside counties, and there has already been a mudslide in Forest Falls, 75 miles east of Los Angeles.

The mudslide happened around 1:50 p.m. Friday when a period of heavy rain doused the area. Residents on Valley Drive of the Falls and other streets in Forest Falls were stuck in 1 to 5 feet of mud, San Bernardino County officials said.

According to a San Bernardino County Fire spokesman, two rescues were made as a result of the mudslide. A swift water team was called in after a couple was separated during the downpour, leaving one woman on the other side of a heavy stream that she could not cross. Rescue teams also saved an elderly man who was hiking during the slide. Both people were successfully rescued and neither was injured.

Firefighters did clear a path in the streets of Forest Falls and roads were opened, although a slight mud flow continued in the Mill Creek area.

Heavy flash flooding was also reported in Victorville. Streets saw heavy mud and water flow, and drivers were advised to drive cautiously. Residents were also told to stay clear of any storm washes.

A strong storm cell moved through Lake Elsinore around 1 p.m. and headed toward the mountains shortly thereafter, leaving behind baking temperatures. Lightning was also reported in the area.

The weather was calmer near Aguanga, which was hit with a fire caused by lightning earlier in the week. Crews say the fire is 100 percent contained. While there was heavy rain in Aguanga Thursday, only light rain and occasional lightning strikes were reported Friday.

This came as the National Weather Service issued flash-flood warnings and watches for San Bernardino and Riverside counties, the San Gabriel Mountains and the Antelope Valley. There was also a chance of thunderstorms for the mountains and high desert, and Yucaipa also saw heavy rain.

Elsewhere in the Southland, the humidity was up as temperatures loomed in the upper 80s to triple digits. A heat wave has plagued Southern California for over a week, causing power outages and state Flex Alerts.
