STANISLAUS NATIONAL FOREST, Calif. (KABC) -- The Rim Fire that began in the Stanislaus National Forest near Yosemite National Park Saturday continued on Wednesday.
The wildfire was 5 percent contained at 9 p.m. Pacific Time Wednesday. The fire had burned at least 16,228 acres.
An 8-mile stretch Highway 120 was closed in the area.
Officials closed one of the main routes into Yosemite, but the park remained open Wednesday.
The fire was burning in rugged terrain classified as extreme by the U.S. Forest Service. At least 858 firefighters were part of the effort.
No injuries were reported.
Two residences and seven outbuildings were lost along Packard Canyon Road on the east end of the fire, according to the U.S. Forest Service. About 2,500 structures were threatened on the western edge of the fire. Some evacuations were ordered.
Rain and weather conditions helped firefighters on Tuesday. A red flag warning was issued Wednesday due to concern about lightning.
The cause of the fire was under investigation. It began on Saturday afternoon.
