Children First - Keeping Kids Healthy

Children First: Keeping Kids Healthy is a ½ hour special airing Sunday, Oct. 11th  at 5:30pm featuring an in depth look at some of the major health issues facing children in the Valley. Hosted by Dale Yurong and Graciela Moreno, ABC 30 explores solutions to some of the most serious health problems in the area.

H1N1
The H1N1 virus is the biggest concern for parents this year. Since the first case was confirmed back in April, the virus, the way it's tested, handled and treated has evolved. Discover how the virus is currently being handled and how you can avoid getting sick this flu season.

NUTRITION
Find out why many kids and families do not have easy access to nutritious food. In many cases, it's leading to an increase in obesity and other health problems among kids. A new produce stand at Addams Elementary School is giving children a healthier alternative to chips and candy.

DENTAL DISEASE
According to California Dental Association, dental disease is more chronic than obesity or asthma. Discover the  Dental Surgery Center in Parlier that's helping kids who can't be seen in a traditional dentist's chair. See how  they correct dental problems in one hour. Find out the common mistakes parents are making when it comes to oral health.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL EFFECTS OF SPORTS
Explore how kids can get burnt out mentally and injured physically  if parents are not careful. Hear what a local star quarterback says about the pressures on and off the field. Learn the common injuries plaguing kids who play year round sports and  a doctor's recommendation for kids and parents.

DEVELOPMENTAL DELAYS
What do you do if you suspect your infant or toddler is not developing normally? Some of these signs can be spotted as early. Recent state cutbacks now limit who gets funding making it even more crucial for parents to potential problems early. All child experts agree early intervention is key.

ASTHMA
Asthma is one of the most chronic conditions facing children in the valley. Local doctors talk about the best approach to treating asthma.

FITNESS CAMP
Kids lose weight at a local fitness camp. In addition to exercising, they learn about healthier eating habits. Find out how much weight they lost in just one summer.
