Feeding the Hungry

About Feeding the Hungry

In partnership with Vons, Smithfield and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union, ABC30 is proud to help usher in the largest combined food drive the Central Valley has ever seen, "Feeding the Hungry." All Central California Vons, ABC30 and the Community Food Bank will be collecting non-perishable food items starting Friday, April 6.  See below for locations and help us celebrate this historic donation by dropping off your donations today!

Then, on April 24, Smithfield and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union are pulling up two big rigs full of 70,000 pounds of quality protein to the Community Food Bank.  The Vons Foundation is also donating $25,000 in cash to the Community Food Bank.  Action News anchor Graciela Moreno will join all of the "Feeding the Hungry" partners at the Community Food Bank for the media event on Tuesday, April 24 at 10:30 a.m. to celebrate this historic donation.

All donations from this event will be distributed to Community Food Bank's partner agencies.  Any individual needing food assistance may call 2-1-1.  Through the 2-1-1 service, Community Food Bank's partner agencies are listed as well as upcoming distributions.  2-1-1- may be accessed 24/7.

Hunger in the Central Valley

Last year, the Central Valley had the highest food hardship rate in the nation. This year, we are second only to Bakersfield.  Vons, Smithfield and the UFCW are proud to join ABC30 in "Feeding the Hungry" in Central California.

"Feeding the Hungry" is a joint program of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union and Smithfield to donate and help deliver 20 million servings of protein over three years to food banks around the country. The partnership is designed to bring much-needed assistance to the growing number of people facing hunger and food insecurity in our communities.

Smithfield Foods and its independent operating companies have a long history of stocking food banks, supporting after-school nutrition programs and providing food relief in the wake of natural disasters.  In January 2008, Smithfield established their Helping Hungry Homes® initiatives to help ensure that American families in need do not go hungry.  Feeding the Hungry is one of Smithfield's Helping Hungry Homes® initiatives.
