Porterville's Annual Veteran's Day Parade

Tuesday, November 11, 2008

Thousands of people flocked to see one Veteran's Day parade that has been a local tradition for decades.

Many people in Porterville say this is the most patriotic city in the state. Every year, thousands of people line the streets for Porterville's annual Veteran's Day Parade.

School bands from across Tulare County flooded Main Street in Porterville to show their support for local veterans.

Sonya Halsey of Porterville says "It's very exciting. All the bands are great. It's just really great to honor our veterans and it's important because they did a lot for us."

Kimberly Moss, Porterville, says "They fought for our country and they stood up for our beliefs and what I believe in."

From hogs to horses, organizers say this year's parade was one of the biggest ever.

Pete Carganilla, Porterville, says "This is something that everybody looks forward to coming to each year."

Retired firefighter Carganilla has watched the parade for more than 40 years. Many people who live in Porterville say the town is especially patriotic.

Carganilla says "In the Vietnam War, we had so many in this small town that people died for their country in that war and I think that's just one of the causes -not to mention all the other wars- but its just one of those things about this town that make us patriotic."

Jesse Gonzales, Jr, Vietnam Vet, says "There's a lot of patriots here, a lot of people that back up the veterans and the war so it's a great town."

The young and the old came out to watch the floats go by, many waving American flags. Many here think Porterville's Veteran's Day Parade brings the community together. Local veterans say they wouldn't miss it for the world.

Virgil Ebeling, U.S. Navy Veteran, says "It's the greatest there is."

More than 130 Tulare County organizations took part in this year's parade.
