Toy giveaway at Fresno Church

Saturday, December 18, 2010

Thousands of children took a stroll through a winter wonderland in Downtown Fresno Saturday morning and each one was greeted by name -- before getting their very own Christmas gift.

Costumed characters escorted each child through Cornerstone Church's conference center, during the church's Annual Toy Giveaway.

The theme of this year's event was "The Grinch" and the green creature himself showed up to help children through the toy maze.

Outside -- people lined up for hours with their children eagerly waiting for their chance at a toy.

"Families are having to make the decision, 'Do I pay the electric bill, do I put food on the table, do I buy a toy?' Well, unfortunately, the toy falls at the end of that line, and rightfully so. We just want to be sure these kids have a Happy Christmas," Jim Franklin said.

Church officials estimate they gave away at least 2,500 toys Saturday donated by church members, The United Way, and Toys For Tots.
