Nordstrom Rack robbery/standoff: 5 people arrested, including one former employee
WESTCHESTER, LOS ANGELES -- Five people were arrested in connection to a violent robbery and hostage ordeal at the Nordstrom Rack store in Westchester, LAPD Chief Charlie Beck announced during a Monday news conference. One of the suspects is a former employee of the store at that location.
Beck said three suspects were arrested for the robbery. They were identified as Troy Marsay Hammock, 29, of Los Angeles; Everett Oneal Allen, 24, of Los Angeles; and Raymond Sherman Jr., 34, of Los Angeles.
Two others were arrested for their actions after the incident, Beck said. They were identified as Rochelle Monique Sherman, 33, of Los Angeles; and Paula Roneshia Bradley, 29, of Los Angeles. Both are being held on $100,000 bail.
It was not clear which of the suspects was the former Nordstrom Rack employee.
Armed men held up the clothing store at the Promenade at Howard Hughes Center late Thursday night just after closing time. An employee called her husband and told him to call police. When officers arrived, they saw a man leaving the Nordstrom Rack with a woman, but he forced her back inside when he saw police. That led officers to believe that there were hostages, so a SWAT team was called to the scene.
After at least two hours, officers entered the store and found 14 hostages. The majority had been forced into one room, while others were found hiding in other places, Beck said. One female employee was sexually assaulted and another female employee was stabbed in the neck, but the wound was non-life-threatening.
"Nordstrom should be very proud of these individuals. The detectives have universally commented on how composed they were and how brave they were," Beck said Monday.
The suspects managed to escape in a white SUV, which was later recovered in Culver City. Police said items related to the store were found inside the vehicle. It remains unclear what was stolen or why the suspects targeted the store.
Four of the suspects are in custody in Los Angeles, while Raymond Sherman is in the custody of the Maricopa County Sheriff's Department in Phoenix, Ariz.
Rochelle Monique Sherman, was convicted of forgery in 1988 and perjury in 2003.
Troy Marsay Hammock was convicted of robbery in L.A. County in 2001.
Everett Oneal Allen, currently has a case pending in Compton for cocaine possession with intent to distribute.
Raymond Sherman Jr. was arrested in Phoenix. He was being held in Phoenix Monday. He has a security guard license and a permit to carry a firearm.
Paula Roneshia Bradley was convicted of one count of prostitution in 2006
Beck said he did not consider the incident a gang-related crime.
