FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- The number of California farms is holding steady.
A newly released U.S. Agriculture Department report shows 81,000 farms were in the state last year. That number is the same as the previous year. The number of farms in the nation as a whole dropped slightly.
The report also shows the average size of a California farm is more than 100 acres smaller than the national average.

California is keeping its position as the nation's top dairy state.
Data released by the U.S. Agriculture Department shows California cows are producing more milk than ever before.
New numbers show the state produced nearly 41.5-billion pounds of milk in 2011. That up almost 3-percent from the previous year.
California recorded slight increases in both the number of dairy cows and the amount of milk each cow produced.
