April 10 AM Live Ag Report

Tuesday, April 10, 2012

Blueberry season in California is starting early this year.

Ag experts say despite the early start in California and several other states across the country. Total U.S. production is expected to be similar to last season. An estimated 500-million pounds of blueberries were cultivated in North America last year, that's up from the previous year.

Ag experts say it's hard to determine exactly how the season will play out because major production is still several weeks away.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is working to make it easier for consumers to compare the costs of conventional and organic produce.

The USDA is developing a weekly report that will track weekly advertised prices of organic fresh produce. Right now those reports are only available to businesses involved with the fresh produce industry.

The report is meant to encourage Americans to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. A specific launch date has not yet been set.
